Pensate di fare promozione all’estero?

English Version

We are pleased to host on our website Alessandro Ragni, music-industry executive, a member of the committee that selected Marco Mengoni and, of course, of the Italian delegation from 2011 to the present. We thank him for taking the time to respond to some of our questions and for his courtesy.

First of all, can you tell us about your role in the Italian delegation and how did begin your collaboration with RAI?

During the two years that I worked in my previous role as Eurovision music-industry executive we created a great relationship with International and Institutional Relations team of RAI. This year, and I thank you again for the opportunity, I was asked to work directly with them to look after  the discography and artist and as a member of the committee that selects the artist.

Let’s go back two years ago.  In 2011, RAI returns to ESC. What was the atmosphere of return since all the people waiting for the return of Italy?

I remember a great enthusiasm for the return of Italy and also a sort of concern that was not a sporadic episode. But after three years we are still here more determined than ever to do right.

Raphael Gualazzi was second surprisingly and first for the juries  with a song  not in a tipical ESC style. Was it also your surprise or, in some way, did you expect it?

Honestly I did not expect at the beginning even though we all worked to give your best. Raphael is a unique artist, he goes beyond all barriers with the strength of talent and his music. During the week we felt growing enthusiasm and affection around him and slowly we started to feel that we could get a decent placement. I remember that after mid-race we were pretty much at the bottom, the excitement in the green room seeing him climb position on position was incredible. The second place amazed and proud us at the same time and contributed to keep alive the work abroad that we taken months before. Today Gualazzi, thanks Eurovision, it is our pride and joy abroad, his new album released by Blue Note in different countries and his tours are designed to touch many European markets.

Last year, however, Nina Zilli ends his experience at ESC ninth and fourth for the juries. All people thought us in top 5, or even in top 3. What do you think went wrong, provided always something went wrong, since we were in top 10?

Well, I do not think there is anything in particular went wrong. Nina did a great job and she was great both on stage and on the backstage. She was a perfect interpreter of the spirit of Eurovision, which is a competition but also a great time to union and music sharing. We started very strong then some other song rose in popularity during the week.

Closing in top 10 with the single on iTunes the day after in many countries I think it can be considered a good result.

A constant of these two years is it seems juries lik very much our songs, but the public seems doesn’t like them. What do you think? Mengoni might be the right singer?

I think Marco Mengoni has all the credentials to represent perfectly the idea of quality, strength and elegance that we have set as a goal when choosing the artist.

It is too early to make predictions, but we really believe that Marco will represent our country at its best. We have always believed strongly in this choice and we are pleased that, along with his record label and management, he has enthusiastically agreed to participate.

Is still there suspicious attitude towards the ESC by the record company or do you think things are finally changing?

The music industry, as many other sectors, is facngi a constant state of crisis with a contraction of sales volume that can only result in lower budget allocation for development projects.

If we add the fact that export Italian music has become increasingly difficult for a wide variety of reasons, it is easy to see that it is not automatic to understand a reality from which we have been away for so many years as such as Eurovision. Everything that is introduced back needs a physiological time to grow. The industry attitude and awareness around the event is changing favorably. And every day I realize that the perception of Eurovision is also growing among the people and the viewing public.

The truth is that Eurovision is not only a music and entertainment show but also an important moment of public service and promotion of Italian culture, in this case the music, in Europe.

Just RAI is able to offer to an artist an audience so big and important, and to the discography a real opportunity to be able to export the Italian product.

The name of Mengoni, even as a rumor, was a long in Internet. Who  proposed to him ESC?

The choice is the result of the work of the Committee. Marco has a strong appreciation by the public including Eurovision fans. Considering he arrives in Malmö strong of the victory fo Sanremo Festival we can truly be satisfied about the choice.

How did you react Marco about the idea of this experience and to perform in front of an audience so big?

He understood the spirit of the event  immediately. I know he is excited to participate and represent his country. Both he and his entourage have embraced the idea with great desire and participation.

Do you think to promote abroad? We know, for example, Marco will be a guest of the Spanish National Final.

I saw Sony very determined to pursue this opportunity and in accordance with the calendar of the artist and the opportunities that will come, I hope that we will see Marco in many television show and around Europe. Its presence in Spain is intended  in this sense.

The song has not yet been decided, but is there the possibility it will be completely in Italian? Europe asks for it!

We are well aware that the time has come for a song completely in Italian.

It has not yet decided on the song, is the orientation of everyone.

It is not only Europe to ask us, but the awareness of all of us that the language of Italian music has been able to travel the world for decades through opera librettos and quality po music of many of our authors and performers and, in our language . Internationalization is not only to communicate in the language everyone understand the best but also be able to convey a strong identity. The music can often get to the heart of the people beyond language barriers. We are confident that Marco will translate into a contemporary way that spirit on Malmö stage.

Thanks to the willingness and good luck! Would you like to leave a message to Italian eurofans?

Thank you. Follow us on RAI 2 the 18th of May at 21.00 CET, Let increase Eurovision together. We are One!!!
