Il trio delle Elaiza è composto dalla cantautrice e pianista Ela, dalla fisarmonicista Yvonne Grünwald e dalla contrabbassista Natalie Plöger. Le ragazze sono riuscite a partecipare alla finale nazionale, come wildcard, vincendo su oltre 2 200 artisti che si erano iscritti tramite Youtube. Hanno staccato poi il biglietto per Copenaghen, superando sette dei più famosi artisti della scena musicale tedesca. All’Eurovision Song Contest 2014 canteranno Is it right.

Ci potete raccontare com’è cominciata la vostra carriera musicale?
Avevo sedici anni quando ho iniziato a lavorare negli studi Valicon come cantautrice. Durante il mio lavoro lì, ho incontrato Yvonne con la sua incredibile fisarmonica. Abbiamo improvvisato molto insieme e abbiamo deciso di cercare un contrabbassista per il nostro progetto e ci voleva una ragazza! Questo ha complicato le cose! E qui arriva la parte divertente: Yvonne è stata invitata a una festa di un amico, che non è solo un musicista, ma anche il creatore di un nuovo liquore chiamato, Pijökel. Durante quella festa Yvonne, su una lavagna, ha scoperto una foto di una bella ragazza con un grande contrabbasso. Abbiamo ottenuto il suo numero di telefono molto rapidamente! 🙂 L’abbiamo chiamata e le abbiamo mostrato alcune idee che le sono piaciute subito. Così è nata la nostra band Elaiza, all’inizio dello scorso anno.
Parliamo di “Is it right”, il brano che presenterete a Copenaghen?
A volte è molto difficile trovare la giusta direzione nella propria vita e si tratta di una situazione che tutti al mondo hanno vissuto. La stessa cosa è valsa per me quando ho scritto la canzone. Tutto stava cambiando intorno a me e ho dovuto prendere un sacco di decisioni. Ho pensato che fosse una buona idea descrivere quella situazione e spiega che tu sei il responsabile della tua vita. Non importa cosa succeda, la vita va avanti: “I can go on, you can go on” 🙂
Come vi sentite a rappresentare la Germania all’ESC 2014 e come mai avete deciso di partecipare alla selezione nazionale?
Siamo così orgogliose di aver vinto la selezione tedesca. Non eravamo le favorite con i nostri fan, che stanno iniziando ad aumentare da poco tempo, e con il nostro piccolo team intorno a noi. Siamo ancora completamente sopraffatte e ancora non possiamo crederci. Ogni mattina ci svegliamo e ci diciamo che andremo a Copenaghen per rappresentare il nostro paese.
Abbiamo deciso di partecipare alla selezione tedesca perché abbiamo pensato che la nostra musica potesse andare bene per l’Eurovision Song Contest, soprattutto per il fatto che unisce tre culture diverse: Ucraina, Polonia e Germania. Questo è il motivo per cui abbiamo deciso di candidarci come wildcard,ma non avremmo mai e poi mai immaginato di poter vincere questo evento. Il fatto di aver vinto vinto a Colonia è tuttora incredibile! Siamo così felici e grate di aver avuto la possibilità di rappresentare la Germania con la nostra musica! 🙂 Soprattutto io che sono una grande fan dell’Eurovision Song Contest! Sono cresciuta con quello show! Ogni anno è stato così entusiasmante sedersi davanti alla TV e godere della musica dell’Europa , in particolare gli artisti di Polonia, Ucraina e Germania, perché queste sono le mie radici! Non dimenticherò Ruslana quando ha vinto l’Eurovision Song Contest 2004! Mi piace molto la sua canzone 🙂
Che cosa vi aspettate dall’esperienza a Copenaghen?
Partecipare è tutto! E questo ci rende calme. Daremo tutto il nostro meglio e cosa più importante per noi: ci divertiremo! Siamo naturali, autentiche e oneste e questa è il motivo per cui vogliamo presentare la nostra musica in questo modo.
Ci anticipate qualcosa sulla vostra esibizione sul palco della B & W Hallerne?
La nostra canzone sarà la parte più importante, non solo lo spettacolo. Quindi credo che ciò che veramente potete aspettarvi è nientaltro che noi tre: le Elaiza!
È uscito da poco (28 marzo) il vostro album “Gallery”. Volete parlarcene? E dei vostri progetti futuri?
L’album è molto vivace e ha una grande varietà di temi nelle canzoni e nella loro realizzazione musicale. Ecco perché l’abbiamo intitolato “Gallery”. Le canzoni sono come foto in una galleria e raccontano una storia. Ogni canzone è diversa e si sente diveramente. Durante la scrittura osservo e cerco di prendere le cose nel mio ambiente e di annotarle.
In futuro ci piacerebbe andare in tour, viaggiare e cercare di raggiungere un sacco di gente con la nostra musica. Siamo così fortunate che stiamo avendo la possibilità di farlo ora. Il sogno di ogni musicista in questo mondo e noi lo apprezziamo molto!

Can you tell us how your musical career started?
I was sixteen years old when I started to work in the Valicon studios as a singer/songwriter. During my work there, I met Yvonne with her amazing accordion. We jammed a lot together and we decided to get a contrabass player into our project and we wanted a girl! That made our situation a bit complicated. And here comes the funny part: Yvonne was invited to a party of a friend, who is not only a musician but also a creator of a new liqueur called ,Pijökel. At that party at a pin board Yvonne discovered a picture of a beautiful girl with a big contrabass. She managed to get her phone number very quickly 🙂 We called her, showed her some ideas and yeah: she loved it. So we started our Band Elaiza in the beginning of last year.
Let’s talk about “Is it right,” the song that you submit in Copenhagen.
Sometimes it’s very hard to get the right direction in your life and it’s a situation that everyone in this world knows. Same for me when I write the song. Everything was changing around me and I had to make a lot of desicions. I thought it was a good idea to describe that very situation and to explain that YOU are responsible for your life. No matter what happens, life’s going on: “I can go on, you can go on” 🙂
How do you feel to represent Germany in Eurovision 2014 and why did you decide to take part in the German national selection?
We are so proud to have won the German pre-contest to the ESC. Weʻve been complete underdogs with our fanbase just starting to grow and our small team around us. We are still completely overwhelmed and we still canʼt believe it. Every morning we wake up and have to tell ourselves that we will go to Copenhagen to represent our country.
We thought that our music might fit for the Eurovision Song Contest, especially because of the aspect that our music connects three cultures: Ukraine, Poland and Germany. That’s the reason why we decided to apply for the wildcard festival, and we never ever thought that we could win this event. That we then even won in Cologne is still unbelievable! We are so glad and thankful that we’ve got the possibility to present Germany with our music. 🙂 Especially I am a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest! I grew up with that show! Every year it was so exciting to sit in front of the TV and enjoy the music of Europe, especially the artists of Poland, Ukraine and Germany, these are my roots! I won’t forget Ruslana when she won the Eurovision Song Contest 2004! I like her song a lot:)
What do you expect from Copenhagen experience?
Taking part is everything. And that makes us calm. We will give everything and most important to us: We will have fun! We are natural, authentic and honest and that’s the reason why we want to present our music that way.
Can you tell us something about your performance on the stage of B & W Hallerne?
Our song will be in the focus, not just the show. So I guess what you really can expect is the three of us: Elaiza!
Your album “Gallery” came out on March 28th. Can you talk about and what about your future plans?
The album is very colourful and has a huge variety concerning the topics of the songs and their musical realisation. Thatʼs why we called it “Gallery”. The songs are like pictures in a gallery that tell a story. Each song is different and feels different. During songwriting I observe and try to catch up things in my environment and just write them down.
About the future we would like to go on tour, travel around and try to reach a lot of people with our music. We are so lucky that we are getting a chance to do that now. The dream of every musician in this world. We appriciate that a lot!
